BONDI JUNCTION EVENT CINEMAS BAR
Completed 2009
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The Set Bar was an existing cinema bar on the way to the upper level of the Events cinema complex. Indyk was asked to work within the existing shell to create a revitalised space.
Our first intervention was to create a plywood open room, at the entry point of the landing of the escalator. By pulling the bar entrance out to this more obvious position, the bar took a more formative role in the foyer space. Existing remnant timber plywood ceilings were kept and incorporated into the new scheme. A new bent plywood language of curved ceiling elements that came to ground as columns, defined seating nooks. A sculptural energy was overlaid onto what was a static pre-existing design. The existing Set Bar was re-clad in polished granite reflecting the new carpet patternings. The existing long banquettes were divided into smaller harbours of seating by the simple addition of a red table placed at right angles to the seating.
The Set Bar was completely transformed from an aqua grey corporate style fitout to a multi-layered textured, red, black and white counterpoint.
