IDEAS ON THE EDGE | PARRAMATTA CULTURAL PRECINCT
2011 (unbuilt)

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
With an existing theatre accessed via Ferry, Parramatta was seeking to centralize its cultural and arts centre. ‘Ideas on the Edge’ was a competition to relook at the existing theatre, and a large empty lot on the opposite side of the river. Indyk Architects took the approach of enlivening the river edge, meanwhile creating new buildings which “talked” to each other across the river. In part the theatre was retained, with modern additions creating a central meeting point and more obvious entrance. New theatres, dance and rehearsal rooms were housed in the new additions.

A new arts centre and gallery located on the opposite side of the river boasts cafes and public art galleries, all within a large open square. Stepping down at the river edge, hard and landscaped platforms create an amphitheatre, seating areas- A sculptural built edge. Retained and new significant trees soften, shade, and provide a public scale to the development.
